Ice Castles at Cripple Creek

Morgan Navas | January 24, 2024

Tucked away in a town known primarily for its gaming and casinos, there is hidden magic to be found at the Ice Castles in Cripple Creek. You heard me right, ice castles.

You live out all your “Let it Go” dreams in a place like this. Not to mention, they are a great photo opp for any winter posts. I would recommend going after sunset in order to see the castles in a whole new light…literally. After the sun goes down, the castles are lit with a plethora of different colors, definitely worth it being a little colder!

One thing I learned…make sure to wear good socks and shoes because it gets chilly! I found it difficult to keep my feet warm as we waited in line to participate in the ice slides they had set up around the venue. (I have to say, I would have loved to see a hot cocoa station set up to keep warm, but a girl can dream).

Another thing to keep in mind is the earlier in the day, it seemed like there were much more rambunctious children running around. So if that’s your scene, go for it! Personally I enjoyed it later on after the families started to dwindle a bit.

Oh! I forgot to mention another destination in the area is a statue with about a .5 mile round trip walk to, called Rita the Rock planter. The giant wooden troll was definitely an unexpected, quirky addition to our trip.
